Housing investment company SATO now uses green electricity in all of its buildings

Jul 3, 2014

Annual carbon dioxide emissions cut by more than 9%

The early months of the year have seen SATO switch over to electricity produced from renewables in all of its residential properties.

Director Juha-Pekka Järvenpää from SATO:

- We consume 26 million kilowatt hours of electricity every year. Our switch to green energy from hydropower helps cut our annual carbon dioxide emissions by around 5,000 tonnes, which means more than 9%.

- SATO's most important environmental impacts arise from the energy consumption of the residential properties owned by us, and we have been setting stricter and stricter savings targets all the time. Last year we made a commitment under our Climate Partner agreement with the City of Helsinki to reduce our specific heat consumption by 15% from the 2009 level by 2016. Our target for specific electricity and water consumption cuts is 15% from the 2004 level.

- At the end of last year our specific heat consumption had decreased by 12.9% from 2009, our specific water consumption by 10.4% and electricity by 18.1% from 2004. This means we have exceeded our target set for electricity, and our decision to switch to renewable energy has made our success even clearer.
