Recycling challenge for children: superheroes of the waste shelters

Sorting waste is one of the most important environmental actions and a key way to keep your neighbourhood clean. Take up this recycling challenge with your children and help them become superheroes of waste collection.

By sorting and recycling waste correctly, you help keep birds and other animals away from the bins, maintain the cleanliness of your home surroundings, and keep costs down. Organic waste, paper, cardboard, glass, metal, and plastic packaging – each of these has its own collection bin in SATO buildings, and they should be used accordingly.

Small actions have a big impact. By recycling correctly, you achieve a lot of good.

Sorting waste – even this helps

Sometimes life is so busy that we need to lower our standards. At such times, remember to at least do the following:

  • Separate organic waste from mixed waste. Organic waste includes all edible items, which attract birds, rats, and other animals. By sorting organic waste separately and recycling it in its own bin, you help keep unwanted visitors away.
  • Flatten cartons and packages. Bins fill up quickly if trash bags are stuffed with large packages and air. Flatten waste as much as possible – this saves space and allows more bags to fit in the bins.
  • Do not leave trash bags on the waste collection area floor. They attract animals and cost extra to clean up.

Did you know?

Waste bins are not emptied on weekends, so they are fullest then. If possible, take out the trash on Friday or wait until Monday.

Challenge: Superhero of the Waste Collection Area

A task awaits you in the waste collection area!

Conquering mountains of rubbish doesn't require heroic feats, but there’s always work for superheroes – and now you can become one: Take on the Superheroes of Waste Collection challenge and ensure that the right trash bag ends up in the right bin. Fill in the game board by colouring a new square after each successful sorting. When all the squares are filled, you’ve earned your cape as a true superhero among others, and perhaps a joyful reward from an adult at home!

Tip for parents

Home waste collectors and future waste collection superheroes must be at least 120 cm tall – otherwise, they won't be able to open the bin lid. So, don’t send a shorter superhero on a trash trip; instead, assign them another superpower, like being a dusting dynamo or bed-making champion.

It's crucial to get waste into the bin and close the lid to keep the waste area tidy and rodents away!

What about hazardous waste or electrical appliances?

Household electrical and electronic waste (WEEE) is accepted free of charge at WEEE collection points. Take old medicines and thermometers to the pharmacy. Batteries have their own collection points at many shops or glass collection points. Hazardous waste should be taken to waste stations. Mobile collection units also accept hazardous waste.

Good luck and have fun with the game!
