What is it like to live in Turku?

Turku is the heart of Southwest Finland, where the services of a major city meet the relaxed lifestyle of the west coast. Although it is one of Finland’s largest cities, it still retains a touch of small-town charm.

The city centre’s services are within walking distance, and residential neighbourhoods spread around the River Aura, which flows through the city. But that’s not all! There are plenty of other reasons why people enjoy living in Turku.

Excellent transport connections within the city and across Finland

Getting around Turku is easy. Everyday journeys can be made conveniently on foot or by bicycle. And why not, when almost everything you need in the city centre is just a short distance away!

The Market Square, located in the heart of the city, is the hub of the local bus network. Föli buses connect residential areas with neighbouring municipalities such as Kaarina, Lieto, Raisio and Naantali.

Travelling from Turku to the rest of Finland is equally straightforward. Trains depart from the main railway station for Helsinki and Tampere almost every hour, while bus connections link the city with destinations including Pori and Rauma.

The city’s coastal location adds another dimension to travel. The Port of Turku serves as a gateway to Åland and Stockholm, while the airport provides convenient connections to both domestic and international destinations.

A city of students and professionals

The roots of Finland’s oldest city stretch back to the Middle Ages, when Turku was the country’s centre of learning as well as a thriving hub of trade and maritime activity. That tradition continues to flourish today. Turku is one of Finland’s leading student cities, where the University of Turku, Åbo Akademi University and other higher education institutions bring youthful energy and an international atmosphere to the city.

Turku also offers a wealth of career opportunities. One of the city’s largest employers is Meyer Turku, whose shipyard builds some of the world’s largest cruise ships. Turku is also known as Finland’s leading pharmaceutical city, with Bayer Oy being one of the sector’s major employers.

Coastal nature and a rich cultural scene

Anyone who enjoys nature and outdoor activities will appreciate Turku’s wide range of recreational opportunities. The banks of the River Aura invite visitors to walk and cycle throughout the year, and the riverside routes make it easy to travel from one district to another. Nature trails wind through the oak forests of Ruissalo, where you can pause to admire the sea views or take a refreshing swim. Hirvensalo also offers coastal paths, rocky scenery and lush outdoor areas. If you feel like venturing further afield, the Archipelago Trail takes you into the heart of the coastal landscape by car, bicycle or motorcycle.

For culture enthusiasts, Turku offers unique experiences. Turku Castle, the impressive Turku Cathedral and the Aboa Vetus Ars Nova Museum provide fascinating insights into the city’s history. The Medieval Market, meanwhile, brings the Old Great Square to life with the atmosphere of centuries past. At the Luostarinmäki Handicrafts Museum, visitors can glimpse what life was like before modern conveniences.

The undisputed highlight of the summer is the legendary Ruisrock festival, which fills Ruissalo with music and crowds of people. Logomo offers a lively programme throughout the year. This event centre, built in a former locomotive depot, hosts exhibitions, concerts and events that attract visitors from far beyond the city.

Smooth everyday living on both sides of the river

The Market Square is the heart of the city centre. Within just a few blocks, you will find all the essential everyday services, including banks, pharmacies, shops and cafés. Those who enjoy large shopping centres can take care of their errands at Skanssi or Mylly, for example.

Turku is also steadily strengthening its reputation as a food city. Along the banks of the River Aura, you will find top-class restaurants to suit a variety of tastes, while the historic Market Hall offers an abundance of local produce throughout the year.

In Turku, everything is close by, or at least easily accessible thanks to excellent transport connections, including SATO rental apartments.
