Storing strollers, electric scooters and bikes, rollators, and other personal belongings inside a rental apartment can quickly take up space and make everyday life feel cramped. So where should you keep all these items and what exactly are you allowed to store in the different storage areas of your building?
Use your building’s designated storage unit for items you don’t need every day but don’t want to throw away. You can store seasonal clothing and decorations, sports and leisure equipment, suitcases, and extra furniture. Books, papers, and clothing should be stored in well-sealed, moisture-resistant boxes to keep pests away.
What not to store in the storage unit?
Avoid storing valuable items in the apartment building’s storage unit such as jewelry, artwork, or expensive electronics, as these may attract burglars. To help prevent basement break-ins, secure your unit with a sturdy lock and install privacy covers inside the unit. Important documents like passports and official paperwork should be kept in a locked drawer or cabinet inside your apartment.
Due to fire safety regulations, flammable liquids, gases, or explosive materials must not be stored in SATO building storage units, as they pose a high risk of ignition. For example, gas cylinders may not be stored in these spaces.
Storage tips for personal storage units
Use plastic containers with lids to protect your items from dust and moisture. Keep everything elevated off the floor using a wooden beam or pallet to help prevent water damage. Above all, remember to follow fire safety guidelines and the rules of your building.
You may store up to four car tires in your private storage unit.
In the event of damage or loss, SATO does not provide compensation. However, your home insurance may cover such incidents, so please make sure your policy is valid and up to date.
Storage for outdoor equipment, bicycles, and strollers
The outdoor equipment storage room can be used for items such as skis, sleds, non-electric scooters, bicycles, fatbikes, and other large recreational gear. In apartment buildings, strollers usually have their own designated storage space. If you’d prefer not to bring your stroller inside your apartment, it should be taken to this storage area. If you're unsure where the stroller storage is located, feel free to contact us via OmaSATO to find out the safest place to store your stroller or pram.
To ensure fire safety, stairwells and emergency exit routes must be kept completely free of all belongings, including doormats. Items like strollers, prams, and car tires can release toxic gases in the event of a fire. SATO staff and property maintenance personnel have the right to remove any items found in stairwells or exit routes. This helps ensure that all access ways remain unobstructed and safe at all times.
Storage of electric bikes, mopeds, scooters and similar devices
Electric bikes, mopeds, scooters and unicycles can be stored in the bicycle storage room, a personal storage unit, inside your apartment, or on your private balcony, terrace or yard. The same rule applies as with strollers: these devices must not be stored in stairwells, due to fire safety regulations.
Important to note
If your device has a removable battery, it must always be stored inside your apartment even if the vehicle itself is kept in a storage unit. If the battery is non-removable, the entire device should be stored and charged indoors.
Batteries must never be stored or charged in storage units, stairwells or other shared spaces.
Please remember that you are responsible for your own vehicle. In the event of damage or loss, compensation is usually handled through your personal home insurance. SATO is not liable for any damage to or loss of residents’ personal property and such incidents will not be reimbursed.
Storage of mobility aids
Rollators, wheelchairs and other mobility aids should primarily be stored inside the resident’s apartment. If it’s not possible to store the aid at home, please contact us via OmaSATO and we’ll do our best to help you find a suitable storage space or grant an exception to store the device in a shared area.
For senior scooters, the same storage guidelines apply as for electric bikes. If you store your scooter in a shared storage space, please make sure it’s parked in a way that allows others to use the area comfortably as well.
What can you store on the balcony of a rental home?
What should you do with your balcony furniture and decorations when winter arrives? And is it allowed to use a rental apartment balcony for things like storing car tyres or as extra storage space?
Looking for a larger storage?
SATO also rents out larger storage spaces for residents and B2B customers. And while our home buildings have excellent locations, so do our storage spaces!
