How to save water in rental home

Handy tips in six languages

Smart water use is part of a sustainable everyday life – small actions can help you save both money and the environment.

Water consumption varies greatly between rental homes. Some households use less than 50 litres a day, while others consume as much as 300 litres. Fortunately, saving water doesn't take much effort. Simply paying attention to your daily habits and making a few small changes can make a big difference.

Report a leaking water fixture promptly

If you notice a leaky water fixture in your SATOhome, send us a message via OmaSATO without delay. In addition of wasting water, a leaky fixture can cause water damage.

Turn off the tap

Merely a minute in the shower uses up to 15 litres of water from which 60 percent is heated. Please, turn the water off when you apply shampoo or soap, and try to shower in less time. Don’t forget to turn off the tap when brushing your teeth, applying soap or shaving your beard.

Here's an extra tip for staying hydrated: instead of running the tap until the water turns cold, fill a water bottle or jug and keep it in the fridge.

Use less water while in sauna

While in sauna you might unwittingly use more water than necessary. It’s nice to shower before the first ´löyly´ and wash yourself after the last one, but in between the best way to cool down is to take a breather in the dressing room or on the balcony/terrace instead of showering.

Dish washer saves water and energy

If you have a dishwasher, please use it. The dishwasher is great for saving water because it uses just the water it needs. Newer appliances are more energy efficient and use less water than the older appliances. If you wash dishes by hand, fill the sink or use a dishpan and avoid washing or rinsing dishes under running water.

New washing machine beats the old in efficiency

When doing the laundry, always wash full loads. Modern washing machines automatically use less water than older models and often include energy saving features and programmes that help reduce water consumption even further.

If your home building has a laundry room, make use of it. The larger machines let you wash more laundry at once, more quickly, and they use water very efficiently.

Pamper your plants with rainwater

Water your garden plants and balcony flowers early in the morning or late in the evening, not in direct sunlight. If possible, use rainwater for watering.

You can also use cooled cooking water from potatoes and vegetables to water your houseplants.
